Sept. 25, 2004

Los Gatos United 4, Hollister United 1

It was a beautiful day for a 2:55pm start to the Los Gatos United and Hollister United girl’s soccer game.  The Hollister United team Captains were Alexandria Smallwood and Alexandra Osborn

As the game started both teams looked evenly matched; play was limited to the middle of the field, although momentum quickly changed as the opposing team gained control over the ball to make their first score.  Los Gatos was able to find the goal again about 5 minutes later.

The Hollister girls and coaches were struggling and looking for anything that would give them the spark they needed, but that was not to be for the first half.  Alexandria Smallwood had to come out of the game with an injury that she sustained in last week’s game against Sunnyvale.  The opposing team made their third score before the half.

Right off the bat in the second half Kiley Fontaine took a very hard kick to the abdomen which stopped play, but thankfully she was able to leave the field under her own power

This put a lot a pressure on the coaching decisions on what to do.  Patty Lauguna, Morgan Brazil, Chase Miguel and Alexandra Osborn stepped up to the plate for the defense and did an excellent job of keeping the ball on the opposing team’s side.  This gave the offence time to get their game on.  Kylie Garcia broke out earlier and took a shot on the opposing team’s goal.    Kristen Callanta also took a shot on goal, but tripped last second so there was no power behind the ball and it trickled in the goalies hands.  Kylie Garcia answered right back with another shot on goal and from my vantage point of being about 2 feet off the right side goal line it looked like the ball broke the goal line as the goalie covered the ball, but the referees didn’t see it.

Despite Hollister putting on tremendous pressure, Los Gatos was able to find the goal one more time.

This time Hollister was able to answer Los Gatos.  Kristen Callanta drove the ball down the center of the field finding Alex Reckas to her right and passing the ball of to her.  Alex was able to capitalize on the pass immediately taking a shot on goal.  Alex was able to find the back of the net.  It looked like a play they have been rehearsing for months and was by far the best effort goal of the game.

Alex Reckas once again came back with the pressure and another shot on goal, but was stopped by a diving effort from the opposing team’s goalie.

If Hollister United could have had first half like the second half, this game would have had another outcome.  There were plenty of missed opportunities by Hollister and I am sure the girls will be working on this at their next practice.

Coach Dave said, “The loss of some key players weakened the Defense, but there was an outstanding effort by the team in the second half.”

Kylie Garcia stated after the loss that “it was a tough game, but the team played well.”

Next Hollister United will meet the San Jose Xtreme in San Jose on Oct 9th at 10:30am.
