Sunnyvale Roadrunners '95 4, Hollister United 0

Hollister United still fired up from their win last Sunday traveled to meet the Sunnyvale Roadrunners ’95 who have been undefeated since last season. It was a chilly and breezy 62º for the 10:20am game startThe field conditions were “yucky!” according to Kristen Callanta.

Coach Adolfo, knowing the team Hollister was facing is a very tough team stated “We don’t want to fall behind. We want come out with a strong defense and speed up front”.

The Team Captains for Hollister for today’s game were Kristen Callanta and Alex Reckas.  The opposing Captains met at center field for the coin toss, which Hollister won.  Hollister chose what side of the field they wanted and Sunnyvale kicked off.

After an initial push to the United side of the field, Hollister gained control of the ball and was able to push the ball down to the Roadrunners goal.  United was able to keep play limited to mid-field and the Roadrunners side.  Alexandria Smallwood did an outstanding job at keeping the Roadrunners away from the United goal and limiting play on their side of the field.  Deanna Rodrigues also made awesome stops and was able to get the ball away quickly with her monster kicking ability, fending off anything that came her way

The first goal came late in the first half for the Roadrunners.

Kiley Fontaine, seeing action for the first time this season due to an injury, made a tremendous break away pushing up field and catching the Roadrunners off guard.  Unfortunately, the push was short lived as the halftime whistle blew.

During half time, the Coaches were able to get the United team watered and fired up for the second half.  Just after the second half kickoff, the Roadrunners came out of nowhere and scored a second goal.  Then with momentum on their side, they immediately scored another goal.

Alex Reckas did a great job of putting pressure on the Roadrunners in the second half.  She was able to break away and make a drive down field at least 4 different times and making a shot at their goal.

The Roadrunners then came up with a forth goal.  The United girls were doing their best and giving their all, but were running out of steam.

Kristen Callanta was sent in as Goal Keeper and was able to stem off attacks by the Roadrunners for the rest of the game, she was strongly assisted by Chace Miguel’s excellent defensive work keeping the ball away from the goal box.

The United team took on the hardest team in their division and held them off for a first half that gave the Roadrunners a moment of pause.

After the game, Coach Ted said “This has been a real learning experience.”

Despite this disheartening loss, Hollister United is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the near future.

Next Saturday, Hollister United takes on Los Gatos United (TBA) in Los Gatos. Hollister lost to Los Gatos 2-1 for Game 1 of the season and the girls will be ready for a rematch.
